In a shopping centre near Leipzig, a total of 13,000 square metres of old PVC floor coverings were produced as part of a major conversion and renovation project. The demolition company in charge of the disposal deliberately decided not to simply incinerate the supposed construction waste, but to recycle the old material. In this way, new PVC products can be created from the old flooring.
"The fact that this is technically possible and usually cheaper than incineration has unfortunately not yet got around among demolition companies and their clients everywhere," says Dr Jochen Zimmermann, managing director of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC-Bodenbelag Recycling (AgPR). The company, which was founded more than 25 years ago, coordinates the recycling of old material nationwide and operates its own special recycling plant in Troisdorf near Bonn. More than 2,500 tonnes of discarded floor coverings were recycled there in 2016.
