King Ludwig II of Bavaria (the "Kini") had the building, which is modelled on the exterior of a medieval knight's castle, built from 1869 onwards at great expense and with great attention to detail. However, the eccentric monarch only lived there for 172 days after the castle was completed before his unexplained death in Lake Starnberg on 13 June 1886.

In addition to the living and servants' rooms, the throne room and the Singers' Hall are among the main attractions inside the castle. King Ludwig could never have imagined that the rooms in Neuschwanstein would one day be visited by almost 1.5 million people a year. Especially in summer, an average of 6,000 tourists crowd through rooms that were originally only intended for the regent or a small group of his court - an enormous burden. The Bavarian Palace Administration is therefore constantly endeavouring to preserve this precious building.

The highly frequented throne room has a valuable mosaic pattern on the floor. If it were unprotected, the surface would rub off and fade within a short time. For this reason, those responsible came up with a creative solution: A PVC protective floor covering, printed with the exact "photocopy" of the mosaic, a "photo floor", was applied to the walkable parts of the hall. visuals united AG in Kaarst near Düsseldorf specialises in this type of custom-made product. It has developed the individually printed vinyl floor, patented throughout Europe, which opens up a wide range of different design options. The product is frequently used for trade fairs, events, as decoration in retail outlets and for TV productions and, of course, in museums and historical buildings.

PVC floor coverings in general are extremely durable and are therefore used in numerous buildings with high footfall, such as schools, government offices, public areas, offices or residential buildings. Despite the robust material properties, the floor coverings in Neuschwanstein Castle also wear out due to the large number of visitors and then have to be replaced from time to time. The company has a special, sustainable concept for their disposal: the used PVC floor coverings are completely recycled so that the material can be reused at a later date.

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC-Bodenbelag Recycling (AgPR) in Marl ensures that this works smoothly. Founded over 25 years ago, the company coordinates the recycling of old material throughout Germany and operates its own specialised recycling plant in Troisdorf near Bonn. In this way, we contribute to a closed, environmentally friendly material cycle," says Managing Director Dr Jochen Zimmermann. The old PVC floor coverings from Neuschwanstein are processed into finely ground material in the plant, which was built in 1991. If suitable, this can then be easily used in the production of new PVC construction products. AgPR also maintains a nationwide network of collection centres.

"Solid protection for the floor of his throne room while preserving its attractive appearance and the environmentally friendly handling of the discarded protective flooring - that would certainly have pleased the nature-loving 'Kini'," Zimmermann is certain.

(Photo: visuals united ag with the kind permission of the Bavarian Palace Administration)

Majestätisch auf einem Felsen gelegen, erhebt sich Schloss Neuschwanstein in märchenhafter Kulisse über der Ebene von Hohenschwangau bei Füssen.
