A new Conversio study shows: Germany could recycle significantly more plastics. Chemical processes offer additional opportunities as a supplement to mechanical recycling - especially for waste that can hardly be recycled to a high standard using conventional processes. Last year, however, only four smaller pilot plants for the chemical recycling of mixed polyolefin waste were in operation in Germany (max. 4,000 tonnes per year per plant) and one industrial plant (20,000 tonnes per year) for the pyrolysis of used tyres. Two industrial plants for mixed polyolefin waste (24,600 tonnes/p.a. and 50,000 tonnes/p.a.) are currently under construction, and 10 further plants of various sizes are being planned.
In addition to an overview of current capacities, the study now presented also provides an outlook up to the years 2030 and 2035. It was compiled by the market research company Conversio, which has been producing the „Plastics material flow picture“ study for the industry for many years. The study was commissioned by the BKV with the support of Plastics Europe Deutschland and the VCI.
