Chemical recycling can improve the recycling of plastic waste that cannot be recycled mechanically. The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT has developed a Interactive map of chemical recycling activities in Europe which covers installed systems, technologies, capacities and project status across the entire continent.
The European steam cracker locations and capacities are also listed in the logistical context.
There are currently 65 chemical recycling projects in Europe on the map. The planned capacity (excluding cancelled and operational projects) is 2,799 kt/a. (per year). There are currently 18 plants in operation with a total capacity of 289 kt/a (pyrolysis 262 kt/a; solvolysis 19 kt/a; solvent-based 8 kt/a). No gasification plants are currently in operation.
